How tamper monitors strategic assets on critical defense infrastructure.

Current Solutions, Challenges and Expected Outcomes:

Our client, a strategic organization conducting topographic and bathymetric surveys on behalf of the French armed forces, operated a sovereign cloud storage infrastructure hosted by Outscale, certified under SecNumCloud and fully suited to the sensitivity of its strategic data.

However, the cloud provider's compliance alone was not sufficient to guarantee the ongoing integrity of assets once stored.

3D seafloor maps, analytical reports, and technical documentation represent a critical information asset for national sovereignty.

The main challenge was the lack of real-time visibility into operations performed on this data, including unauthorized modifications, accidental or malicious deletions, and silent data corruption.

Our client was looking for a solution capable of monitoring asset integrity without compromising infrastructure sovereignty, while rapidly detecting abnormal behavior that could indicate an intrusion or an attempt to exfiltrate these sensitive resources.

Why tamper Was Chosen?

tamper stood out for its native S3 compatibility with Outscale OOS and its agentless approach, which preserves the existing security architecture while minimizing integration effort and any increase in the attack surface.

Unlike traditional solutions that require agents to be installed close to the storage environment being monitored, tamper operates from outside the cloud perimeter, on a local server, eliminating any additional attack vector.

tamper's ability to automatically characterize modifications using AI was a key factor for the security team. Every file alteration is analyzed to determine its severity and integrity impact.

This level of analytical granularity makes it possible to quickly distinguish a legitimate update to a collaborative document shared among multiple decision-makers from malicious corruption caused by an actor who has impersonated a legitimate user or stolen access keys.

Native integration with the organization's Wazuh SIEM for event correlation finalized the decision, enabling unified threat detection across both infrastructure and data.

How tamper Operates Day to Day?

tamper audits all Outscale OOS buckets containing bathymetric data and strategic documentation on a daily basis. Every operation (addition, deletion, modification, renaming, or relocation) is tracked, creating a forensic integrity log that can be used in the event of an incident.

Reporting dashboards also give the security team a comprehensive overview of the integrity of its data assets, while bucket configuration scoring proactively identifies potential weaknesses (disabled versioning, missing encryption, or overly broad permissions).

Finally, PagerDuty alerts configured for critical events ensure an immediate response from technical teams to mass deletions or suspicious modifications characteristic of ransomware attacks.

Why Do They Recommend tamper?

The organization recommends tamper for its ability to turn cloud storage into a continuously auditable digital vault. Early detection of abnormal behavior has already made it possible to identify two unauthorized access attempts that could have compromised classified data.

The combination of File Integrity Monitoring (FIM) and Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) provides dual protection: active asset monitoring and continuous improvement of the security posture.

The absence of any performance impact and straightforward integration with the existing security ecosystem (SIEM, ITSM) eliminated the operational friction typically associated with such deployments.

Compliance with regulatory requirements in the defense sector is significantly strengthened, with comprehensive documentation of all suspicious activity available for security audits.

Challenges

  • Zero real-time visibility into unstructured assets across remote object storage;
  • Strict regulatory mandate to ensure legal evidentiary proof for archived defense files;
  • Hardened cloud virtual machines strictly prohibiting third-party endpoint agents;
  • Aggressive implementation timeline with an upcoming ISO 27001 compliance audit.

Results

  • Seamless integration into the SOC team's observability and alerting stack;
  • Rapid team onboarding with zero disruption to production workloads;
  • Continuous automated visibility and tamper-detection across sensitive records;
  • ISO 27001 certification renewed with significant savings compared to legacy non-sovereign suites.
